Author Spotlight: W.E. Parker

  • an author of Science Fiction Comedy

Readers, thanks for checking out another Author Spotlight Interview. Let’s give a good, hearty welcome to this week’s guest!

W.E. Parker is a 22-year-old author from Lincoln, United Kingdom. He has been writing in many different genres since he was young and their latest work is their proudest moment and so here they are promoting that work as much as possible in the hope they can garner a small audience for the future!

W.E., thanks for agreeing to be here today. Most author spotlight interviews start off with the boring stuff, but I know what readers REALLY want to know.

If you could have any pet (real/fantasy/no-allergies/no worries about feeding it) what would it be?

I would have a Maine Coon cat; I have one myself in real life and they are the best of both worlds from the Dog Vs. Cat dichotomy. Uber social, loveable, intelligence, and curious. Maine Coons are by far my favourite animal and in any fantasy setting, they’d be a brilliant companion.

I’ve loved all the maine coons I’ve met!

What do you write? And how did you get started?

I got started drawing out ridiculous comics when I was younger, eventually after reading a lot of Tolkien and Douglas Adams I decided to embark on my own writing journey, writing stories that simultaneously never take themselves too seriously but also never veer so far into the comedy section that they’re written as jokes.

I write in all genres, but low-tech punk Sci-Fi is my absolute favourite.

The comedy-but-not-a-joke is a tricky line to walk! Maybe someday I’ll be brave enough to try.

What do you like to read?

I like to read fantasy and science fiction of course, but I cannot help but love historical non-fiction. You can learn so much from the past that can feed into your work as a writer.

I don’t know that I have to read historical non-fiction, I’ve got too many friends with degrees in history, I feel like I got one by osmosis.

What do you drink when you write/edit?

I like to drink anything with sugar in it as it fuels the brain into a rush where I spew out good dialogue that flows before editing it in a serious manner with a cup of tea by my side.

A good sugar rush is a powerful thing, as long as you have enough snacks to stave off the sugar crash.

Do you snack when you write/edit? What are your favorites?

I tend to snack before I begin writing. I find eating distracting, oddly enough!

You’re not alone! But some of us have found ourselves to be snack-fueled.

Name one commonly accepted piece of writing advice that doesn’t work for you

Write every day.

I get burnt out and need extended breaks from writing, the idea that I can always push something out no matter the quality is maddening.

I agree. I can do it for one month a year, but sometimes life happens.

Name one commonly accepted piece of writing advice they can pry out of your cold, dead hands

Read more and read variedly.

There is no better advice than that.

I love hitting my to-read pile and telling myself it’s for me as a writer.

Shameless Self-Promotion time!

The Cloudscape Chronicles

In the Cloudscape, the only guarantee is the world will eventually be consumed by a relentless poisonous mist dubbed ‘The Surround.’ But that doesn’t stop the inhabitants organising themselves appropriately, to their own benefit…

After another drunken stupor, the Scape’s seemingly most useless inhabitant Alphie Ateal finds himself pulled back from the brink of death for a new assignment that’ll put him face to face with the lowest scumbags humanity has to offer. Luckily, he’s one of them. Unfortunately for Alphie, he’ll have to clear his afternoon of organised crime as he uncovers a cult’s sinister plot that’ll threaten the Scape’s already fragile existence.”
